Adding Sermon Content

Sermon Records

The heart of the SMS extension is the Sermon Record. The Sermon Record is like a file cabinet that organizes all the basic files for each week's sermon. The Sermon Record contains the sermon's title, the main date the sermon was presented, the scripture references, the text description of the sermon, an

optional graphic, and search keywords, The Sermon Record can also reference the name(s) of the presenter(s), a sermon series, related topics, and sermon resources. Sermon resources can include virtually any other information you want to provide, including your weekly bulletin, sermon outlines, sermon text, additional study information, pastor's notes, audio files, video files, presentation graphics files, and so on.

Technical Stuff:
The SMS extension organizes this information in a series of tables (see Illustration 17). The Sermon Record is the only “required” record. However, by adding any or all of the additional records (Resources, Speakers, Sermon Series, and/or Related Topics), you greatly expand the extension's potential to manage and display sermon information.

It's time to add your own content for the whole world to see. The first time through, adding a new sermon and all its related information may seem daunting, but once you've added the first record, you'll discover it's really quite easy and becomes intuitive.

Tip: Before adding sermon content, have all the information and files you're going to need at hand. At a minimum you should know the sermon title, the speaker's name, the date the sermon was presented, and you should have access to the sermon file itself (for instance, a Word or WordPerfect or .txt file). Other optional files could include audio or video files, a picture of the speaker, additional graphics used in the worship service, bulletin files, and so on.

Note
: When adding content, always begin by using the List Module.

Technical Stuff: You do not need to be logged in with administrative privileges in order to add content to the SMS extension. This is the kind of task that a Backend User with limited access can do. See the Howtos at www.webempoweredchurch.com/support/howtos/ for more information on adding Backend users with limited privileges.

Although there are as many as five different tables in the SMS extension, they can all be populated when you create a Sermon Record. Because of this feature, the Sermon Record is the only required record necessary for the SMS extension to function.
